If you haven't had a chance yet to play Gears of War 3 than I feel sorry for you. This game is by far the best game to come out so far this year. It's great to see that the first release in the soon to be greatest holiday season for video games not only met expectations, but blew right past them. With such great games coming up like Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Mass Effect 3, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Modern Warfare 3, and Battlefield 3; I could understand some hesitance in buying Gears 3. Especially after the terrible job Epic did on the second game's multiplayer; but I have to say Gears 3's multiplayer is just as good, if not better than Gears 1.
The multiplayer has been finally been balanced. No more lagging around due to your Mexican host, no getting knocked on your ass forever by some stupid smoke grenade, and finally no more two-piece. The shotgun has also been made perfectly and the maps adjusted to the perfect 5v5 size. Not only that, but the new maps are great, including an updated version of Gridlock, the very popular Gears 1 map. Add in smoother graphics, new game types including Team Deathmatch, updated matchmaking, and great servers and you have one hell of a multiplayer masterpiece. But in your race to become the top of the leaderboards, don't forget about the exciting new campaign and other great game modes.
Gears 2 left off with Jacinto being sunk in a last desperate plea to destroy the locust horde and finally end the battle once and for all. Unfortunately for the COG, not only did it destroy their last outpost, but it also did not work. Instead it helped spawn a new enemy, the lambent. A new, deadlier enemy fueled by immulsion and have evolved rapidly into a wide array of dangerous enemies that make the locust from Gears 2 look like a bunch of pansies. So now, with little supplies, and no hope the remaining COG have resorted to salvaging wreckage and staying hidden on ships to survive. Gears 3 campaign is absolutely amazing, from the breathtaking visuals, to the surprisingly well-written narrative, it continues to entertain from start to...well as of the time I'm writing this I am only on Act II (due to lack of time to play), but it was definitely hard to put down.
Yet the best parts of the game may actually be in the less traditional, up to 5 player Horde and Beast modes. The upgraded Horde mode not only has you fending off wave after wave of deadly locust and lambent creatures, but also has a new monetary system. As you know in Horde mode from the previous game, you get points for killing enemies. Now those points mean more than just bragging rights. They actually tie to money that can be spent on things from razor wire to Ion powered troikas. The new improvements definitely ups the re-playability of the mode.
Finally, the new Beast mode acts in a similar fashion to Horde except you are the attacking locusts trying to kill COG, stranded, and COG Heroes such as Dominic Santiago and Marcus Fenix. It is a lot shorter than Horde but is definitely a great change of pace for those itching to finally try out the locust characters. Overall Gears of War 3 is the best game to come out to date and I'd strongly advise anyone who has any interest in videogames to go and pick this game up immediately.
If you have played the game what are your thoughts? Do you think I justly represented the game? What are your feelings about Gears of War 3? Did you like the article? Let me know by simply leaving a comment!
